Peter was born in Leer, South Sudan in 1990 and lived there happily with his parents until the long running civil war erupted in their village. At that time, each family was ordered to give up their eldest sons to fight in the war, and Peter at the age of just seven was taken by the army to train as a child soldier. Fighting in bloody gun battles and never knowing where the next meal was coming from, he somehow survived and managed to escape to safety two years later at the age of nine.
Alongside many thousands of other South Sudanese children who had fled the war, he then spent the next 8 years in Kakuma Refugee Camp in NW Kenya, where he was at least able to go to school. In 2008 Gua Africa assisted him to leave the camp and he successfully completed his High School education in Nairobi, achieving the grades required for University. Peter’s dream is to become a lawyer, so that he can help promote human rights within South Sudan and participate in the development of a fair and peaceful society. He also eagerly awaits the opportunity to be reunited with his parents back in Leer.
