EDUCATE A CHILD: DEVELOP A NATION

Gua Africa provides educational programs for those affected by conflict and persecution in East Africa. We primarily work in Kenya offering education to refugees who have survived war and genocide.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

There are many different ways you can support Gua Africa’s work as an individual and a school or business; such as community fundraising, online shopping, and sponsoring a child.

'You will never know the potential of any child unless that person is given an opportunity; and there is no bigger opportunity than the gift of education and self-development.'

Emmanuel Jal, Founder, Former Child Soldier & Peace Activist

Gatwitch Hub

Since 2019 we have been working with over 400 youth at our inaugural Gatwitch Hub; a refugee led project space at the heart of the South Sudanese community in Kakuma Refugee camp, Kenya. We are committed to developing it as a safe space for our beneficiaries, supporting them with their wide ranging skills, talents and creativity.

Survivors of War Programme

Our Programme empowers young refugees who overcame immense adversity, including child soldiering and genocide, by providing education and vocational training in East Africa. The initiative fosters personal success and self-sufficiency, offering support from primary education to higher learning.

Jal Gua Academy

Jal Gua Academy envisions a transformative education for conflict-displaced youth, fostering leadership and resilience through creative well-being, mental health support, and sustainable farming. It aims to create a safe space for growth and lifelong learning.

Gua means ‘Walk in your Purpose’ and Pole pole means 'slowly' in Swahili.

At Gua Africa we have learned it is best to do this with a ‘pole pole’ approach to ensure our impact is efficient and sustainable.
We work with those affected by conflict and persecution, as well as their host communities and without careful collaboration, consistency and solidarity, partnerships can fail. Our aim is to move our beneficiaries from ‘surviving’ to ‘thriving’ and equip young people with the creativity, ambition, skills and independence to lead and contribute to their communities for the long-term; to walk ‘slowly but surely’’ in their purpose for better futures.

Our annual visit to Kakuma Refugee Camp combine reviews in progress at the Gatwitch Hub (which is now entering its third year), and visiting satellite projects led by our Gua and My Start alumni.

For quality assurance we are committed to delivering annual ‘in person’ training, which includes Safeguarding and EDIB (Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging). Further to this we also offer specialised training, which relates to our strategic development plan. This year our core focus includes provision for women leadership and an Early Years & Infants program.
