In 2011 Gua Africa launched a Teacher Training Programme thanks to generous funding from the SDL Foundation. We offered 5 students the chance to study in Nairobi for a degree in Secondary Education Teaching. In October 2014 all 5 teachers graduated with fantastic grades.
In July 2015 three of these newly qualified teachers returned to the Kakuma refugee camp (in northern Kenya) where they spent many years as young children to teach.
Gua Africa developed a partnership with the UNHCR whereby the teachers have been given full time positions in the camps secondary schools. This fantastic partnership also enabled Gua Africa to pay the teacher’s accommodation and salaries. These teachers are qualified to degree level, which only 2% of South Sudan’s teachers are so the children of the camp are getting a high quality education. We would like to thank the SDL Foundation for making it possible for these teachers to greatly improve the quality of teaching at the camp’s secondary schools. In just 6 months we are seeing improvement in exam scores for both Physics and Biology, the two specialist subjects taught by our teachers.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5eIYxgpj7Y
